University of Missouri--Kansas City
Biography
The University of Missouri--Kansas City traces its origins to the combined Lincoln and Lee University (1925-1930) movement and the University of Kansas City (1929-1933) movement to found a private four-year university in Kansas City. The University of Kansas City opened in October 1933 with a faculty of 17 and a student enrollment of 264. The university grew to include two campuses: the Volker Campus, located south of Brush Creek and near Country Club Plaza; and the Hospital Hill Campus, which houses the School of Nursing, the School of Medicine, the School of Dentistry, and the School of Pharmacy.
The University of Kansas City became part of the University of Missouri System on July 25, 1963. At the time the university joined the UM System, it had 3,300 students and 175 full-time faculty. Its name changed to the University of Missouri--Kansas City (UMKC).
After the merger, UMKC established the School of Graduate Studies in 1964, the School of Medicine in 1970, the School of Nursing in 1980, the School of Basic Life Sciences (later to be named the School of Biological Sciences) in 1985, and the School of Computing and Engineering in 2001.
In July 2022, the university launched UMKC Forward, which included an academic realignment that created three new schools: the School of Education, Social Work and Psychological Sciences; the School of Humanities and Social Sciences; and the School of Science and Engineering.
