Biography

The University of Missouri--Kansas City founded the School of Basic Life Sciences in 1985. The school combined research faculty from the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Medicine, and the School of Dentistry to focus on teaching courses in biochemistry, microbiology, anatomy, and other fields. Dr. Marino Martinez-Carrion joined UMKC as the school's first dean in 1986.

The school was later renamed the School of Biological Sciences in 1992, when the University of Missouri System Board of Curators approved the transfer of the Department of Biology from the College of Arts and Sciences to the School of Basic Life Sciences. Its name changed to the School of Biological and Chemical Sciences in 2019 when the Department of Chemistry from the College of Arts and Sciences merged with the School of Biological Sciences.

In July 2022, the university launched UMKC Forward, which included an academic realignment that created three new schools. The School of Biological Sciences merged into the School of Science in Engineering during the academic realignment.
