John B. Tumino Collection
Scope and Contents
The John B. Tumino Collection was donated to the UMKC Libraries by Robert Tumino in 2005. The collection is small in size but rich in content, especially information related to Kansas City Jazz history.
Housed in LaBudde Special Collections, the manuscript materials are contained in 12 folders located in one box and spans 1940-2005. Included are personal correspondence, royalty statements, promotional material, ephemera and news clippings. Of particular interest are the various contracts among musicians managed by Tumino, including one contract with Decca Records signed by Charlie Parker. There are also 40 snapshots and 6 black and white photographs.
Housed in the Marr Sound Archives, the audiovisual materials consist of reel to reel tape and lacquer discs with artists such as Charlotte Mansfield, Julia Lee, and Jay McShann. Recordings from this collection were used on the Julia Lee Box set, published by Bear Family Records. The collection also has a recording of an unpublished Charlie Parker performance.
