Scope and Contents

The Gerald Kemner Collection was gifted to the UMKC Miller Nichols Library in 2003.The collection encompasses the compositional, professional, and personal life of Kemner, who taught Composition at the UMKC Conservatory for many years. In addition to a comprehensive assembly of Kemner’s musical compositions, you will also find Teaching Materials, Programs, Correspondence, Newspaper Clippings, and Miscellaneous items.

Addendum I was gifted to the UMKC Miller Nichols Library in 2017. The addendum includes additional manuscripts, copies, and sketches of Kemner’s musical compositions;as well as Music of Other Composers; a Personalseries, which includes programs, letters, newspaper clippings, and other miscellaneous items; and Photographs.

Addendum II was gifted to the UMKC Miller Nichols Library in 2007 by his wife Bonnie, but was not processed until 2018, after the first addendum. It includes a small amount of manuscript and published music.

Audio/visual material from this collection is housed in the Marr Sound Archives. The audiovisual materials encompass the compositional, professional, and personal life of Kemner, who taught Composition at the UMKC Conservatory for many years. The recordings consist of Kemner performances in a wide variety of formats: instantaneously cut discs, open reels, and cassettes.
