Ed Dix Collection

 Collection
Identifier: MS-0275

Scope and Contents

The Ed Dix Collection was donated to the Miller Nichols Library at the University of Missouri-Kansas City by Ed Dix. The manuscript collection is housed in the Dr. Kenneth J. LaBudde Department of Special Collections, while the sound recordings are held in the Marr Sound Archives. The collection contains seven boxes and is divided into ten series, which includes scrapbooks, correspondence, contracts, photographs, manuscript scores. It provides an invaluable perspective on the life and work of Bob Brookmeyer as recorded through his friendship with Dix. Many of the Brookmeyer scores in this collection were written gratis for the Eddie Dix Orchestra. For the studious jazz arranger, they are quite the treasure.

An addendum to the collection was added in January of 2017. The addendum contains additional photographs, extensive correspondence between Dix and Bob Brookmeyer, as well as scores, arrangements, and materials related to the production of Dix’s albums One More Time and Full Circle.

The audiovisual collection contains 131 items spanning Ed Dix's musical career, from instantaneous-cut lacquer discs of the 1940s to CD-Rs of the 2000s. The early instantaneous-cut discs are studio recordings but many of the later recordings were recorded live from venues such as the Blue Room and New Point Grille in Kansas City. Jazz artists Arch Martin, Paul Smith, Bob Bowman, Tommy Ruskin, and other Kansas City musicians accompany Ed Dix in these live recordings. The collection also contains recordings of Bob Brookmeyer, Warren Durrett and various Kansas City jazz radio programs.
