Lowell Mason, 1872
Scope and Contents
This folder contains an autograph of composer Lowell Mason. In addition to his autograph, Mason writes that he is 80 years old January 8, 1872. He also wrote out 5 bars of a fanfare which he labels number 351. Below the fanfare is written in a different pen, “writer of Sacred Music died 1872.” Written in pencil on the back of the note is the message, “Lowell Mason, 1792 – 1872, composer of Nearer, My God, to Thee.” The autographed paper was donated to the University of Missouri-Kansas City’s Institute for Studies in American Music by the Janet Boone Service Club, 1972.
