Biography
Wiktor (Victor) Labunski (1895-1974) was a Polish born pianist, teacher, and composer. His brother, Felix Labunski was also a notable composer and pianist. Wiktor Labunski studied piano and composition at the St. Petersburg Conservatory and later studied conducting in Poland with Polish conductor, violinist, and composer Emil Młynarski, who later became his father-in-law, as Labunski married his daughter Wanda.
Labunski was the head of the piano department at the Kraków Conservatory in Kraków, Poland from 1919 to 1928. From 1928 to 1931, he taught at the Nashville Conservatory in Tennessee and in 1931, he became the director of the Memphis College of Music in Tennessee from 1931 to 1937. He made his American piano debut at Carnegie Hall in 1928. Labunski moved to Kansas City in 1937, where he taught piano at the Kansas City Conservatory (now the University of Missouri- Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Dance) and then became the Conservatory director from 1941 to 1971.

Wiktor Labunski Collection
The Wiktor Labunski collection was transferred from University Archives in August 2019. The collection consists of his piano, orchestral, vocal, and chamber compositions. There are also his cadenzas, transcriptions, and arrangements, and other composers’ works that he collected. The collection includes his extensive memoir and compositional notes.
