Biography

Steven Case was a science teacher at Olathe East High School in the 1990s who, along with his children Stevana and Andy Case and nine other students and parents, served as plaintiff in an ACLU suit against the Olathe School District in Johnson County, Kansas centering around the district’s removal of Nancy Garden’s young adult lesbian novel Annie on My Mind from school libraries. The case was decided in favor of the plaintiffs on November 29th, 1995, resulting in the book being returned to library shelves.

The Steven Case Collection was a gift of Case in September 2018 and consists of personal and professional correspondence, court filings, witness deposition transcripts, newspaper clips, position statements, presentation resources, and other materials related to the Annie on My Mind case, especially the involvement of Steven Case; it also includes two maps.
