Biography

Martin Shapiro is a former Kansas Citian now residing in Maryland. During the early to mid-1970s, he was involved with the Gay People’s Union, an early gay and lesbian advocacy and social organization, and with Gay Community Services, a group devoted to providing educational and social programs for the gay community, as well as services such as legal and medical referrals. Mr. Shapiro also participated in the protests by gay and lesbian community members at the 1976 Republican National Convention, held in Kansas City, and at an appearance by anti-gay spokeswoman Anita Bryant the following year.

Scope and Contents

The collection primarily consists of material generated by the Gay People’s Union and Gay Community Services. These include newsletters, promotional materials, and documents related to the structure of the GPU. In addition there are items from the 1976 Republican Convention and from the University of Kansas gay and lesbian student group. Included with the collection contents are handwritten annotations by the donor which contextualize the material.
