Biography
Dorothy Yao was married to Chinese journalist, scholar, and playwright Yao Hsin-nung. The Yao family lived in San Francisco, California, where Yao Hsin-nung taught at San Francisco State University. The Yaos were family friends of Edgar Snow, with Yao's daughter Hilda considering Snow as "Uncle Ed."

Dorothy Yao donated folders 1 and 2, which contain a letter written by Edgar Snow to her husband Yao Hsin-nung, journalist, in September 1969; and a poem her daughter Hilda H. Yao wrote in memory of her father when he passed away in 1991. Hilda H. Yao donated folder 3 in 2005.
