Biography

Sherman Gibson was a lawyer and musician from Kansas City. He was a trumpet player in Warren Durrett’s band during the 1960s and 1970s. He was also part of early efforts to establish a jazz museum in Kansas City. In 1964, Gibson helped organize “Kansas City Jazz, Inc.” This group explored locations for a museum, helped organize yearly jazz festivals, and even began inducting members into a provisional hall of fame. Hamstrung by persistent financial shortcomings, the group did not last past 1975.
