Biography

Ruth Rhoden was a musician and radio personality based in Kansas City. She had a successful career as a jazz vocalist and trumpet player. After the end of her performing career she turned to radio. Along with co-host Ginny Coleman, Rhoden hosted “Just Jazz” on KCUR for 23 years. She also hosted a TV show in Kansas City called “Ruth’s Music Corner.” On that show she interviewed Jazz greats like Dizzy Gillespie. Rhoden grew up on Chicago’s South Side during the 1930s and 40s. She started learning how to sing and play trumpet at an early age. She tried to leave jazz for the medical profession, but after moving to Kansas City she returned to singing in clubs and on the Kansas City Riverboat. Rhoden died in 2010.

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of DVDs, VHS Tapes, and U-matic tapes of Ruth's Music Corner, a public access television program hosted by Ruth Rhoden from 1988-1996. The collection contains many interviews and recordings of live performances by Kansas City jazz musicians. Other recordings include live performances and raw footage from Kansas City Alive, where Ruth had her own jazz-oriented segment, which evolved into Ruth’s Music Corner.
