Biography

Joe Heyen is an independent filmmaker best known for his 2009 film "Cowtown Ballroom…Sweet Jesus!." The film documents the story of the Cowtown Ballroom, a 1970s Kansas City music venue that was a pillar of the Kansas City countercultural movement. Heyen has produced and/or directed over 300 different projects. In addition, he taught filmmaking at the college level for 17 years. Finally, for a few years he was president of the Independent Filmmakers Coalition of Kansas City. During his leadership that group made over 30 feature length films.

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of cassette tapes and CD’s of live concerts at Penn Valley Park, Crown Center, Line Creek Park and the Cowtown Ballroom in Kansas City. The dates of the concerts range from 1973-1979. There is also a copy of the 2009 documentary "Cowtown Ballroom… Sweet Jesus" which was produced and directed by Heyen in the collection.
