Biography

Gradinger was born in Pittsburg, KS in 1920. He was an army flight instructor and served in the army air corps during World War 2. Following his discharge he worked for his father’s business, Gold Star Inc. Along with aviation, jazz music was his great passion. He was active with a variety of jazz enthusiast groups and was a frequent patron of Kansas City’s best jazz clubs. He died in 2010.

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of compact cassettes of live jazz music recorded by Joe Gradinger. Recordings include the Topeka Jazz Workshop, Wichita Jazz Festival, KC Jazz Workshop All Stars, Mid-American Jazz Festival, Denver Jazz Party, and performances by Jay McShann, Milt Abel, Priscilla Bowman, Woody Heman, Dave Brubeck, Zoot Simms, and Marilyn Maye.
