Biography

Lejaren Hiller was born in New York in 1924. He studied the piano, oboe, clarinet and saxophone as a child. He attended Princeton where he eventually earned in PhD in 1947 for chemistry. While in school, he also took composition lessons with Roger Sessions and Milton Babbitt. While working at the University of Illinois as a chemistry research associate, Hiller started experimenting with computers, creating his first computer and electronic compositions. From 1968 until his death, Hiller held a position at the State University of New York in Buffalo as a professor of composition.
