Biography

Jazz drummer, vibraphonist and percussionist Ernest Daniels was born in 1911 in Little Rock, Arkansas. In 1925, his family moved to Kansas City where he graduated from Lincoln High School. A childhood friend of Charlie Parker, Daniels honed his musical skills with several groups, including the leading African-American municipal brass band in Kansas City led by Dan Blackburn, Harry Dillard’s WPA band beginning in 1934, and later when he was enlisted in the United States Navy. Daniels died August 3, 1979.

Scope and Contents

The Ernest Daniels Collection was purchased by the Department of Special Collections from Brian Thurn Antiques of Kansas City in January 2006. The collection primarily consists of photographs, but also includes postcards, news clippings and other ephemera and memorabilia, related to Ernest Daniels, a Kansas City jazz drummer, vibraphonist and percussionist.
