Biography
Will Gay Bottje was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1925. He received a Bachelor’s degree in Flute Performance and a Master’s degree in composition from the Juilliard School. Bottje then went to Eastman where he received his doctorate in 1955. He traveled to Paris to study with Nadia Boulanger and to the Netherlands to study with Henk Badings. Bottje spent time at the University of Utrecht studying at the electronic music studios. In 1965, Bottje went on to start an electronic music studio at Southern Illinois University and also created an electronic music studio after he retired. Bottje has composed two operas, works for orchestra, band, chamber ensemble, and vocal music.
