Biography

Howard Boatwright, born March 16, 1918, was a composer, violinist, and musicologist. Boatwright began working as an assistant professor of violin at the University of Texas in Austin in 1943 before completing his Bachelor’s degree of music from Yale in 1947. Boatwright also went on to complete a Master’s degree from Yale in 1948, where he would study with Paul Hindemith. Boatwright became the director of music at St. Thomas’s church in New Haven and programmed many performances of early music. Although, a proponent of early music, his own compositional style would develop into a self-described “dodecaphonic, though not serial” style. (Grove) Howard Boatwright composed for all genres including orchestral, choral, solo instrumental, and vocal music.
