Biography

Ernest Samuel Berlin was born in Kansas City on June 12, 1917 to Victor Berlin and Molly Levinson. He attended the University of Kansas City (now University of Missouri-Kansas City or UMKC) where he majored in finance and was a member of the Tophatters’ Club, a theatrical production club, graduating in 1942.

After college, he moved to New York City, became a stockbroker and investment consultant, and was promoted to a Senior Vice President at Shearson Loeb Rhoades. In 1978, he married the late Helen Madeloff. Upon their mutual retirement, Helen and Ernie moved to Martin County where they became involved in bringing top classical artists to the Stuart area. He worked to attract and host performing artists from all over the world and bring them to the “Ovation Concert Series” at the Lyric Theatre through his corporation, Treasure Coast Concert Association. Berlin died in 2015 at the age of 97.

The Ernest Berlin Collection is comprised of documents and memorabilia from Berlin’s time as a college student in Kansas City, Missouri. The collection contains posters from productions with The Tophatters’ club of the University of Kansas City as well as an unfinished manuscript for a play. Materials including campus newspapers, playbills, and personal correspondence offer a glimpse into the history of theater at Kansas City University from 1938-1942.
