Biography

Jack Behrens was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 1935. He was educated at the Juilliard School and studied with a multitude of teachers including William Bergsma and Vincent Persichetti and with Roger Sessions while at Harvard University. He also studied with Darius Milhaud and John Cage. Behrens taught theory at multiple schools and notably worked at the University of Western Ontario, teaching theory and composition from 1976-1980 and became the Dean of the Faculty of Music and held that position till 1986. Behrens composed a single opera, The Lay of Thrym, and has composed for solo voice, piano, flute, and chamber ensemble.
