Biography

James M. Beale was an orchestral and instrumental composer born January 20, 1924 in Wellesley Hills, Massachusetts. Beale served in the American Field Service during World War II and graduated from Harvard with a Bachelor’s degree in 1945. He then went on to receive a Master of Music from Yale University. For forty-six years, Beale taught at the University of Washington in Seattle starting in 1948. Beale composed symphonic works, piano sonatas, cello concertos, etc. during his lifetime and composed his Cressay Symphony after being awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship in 1958.
