Biography

The School of Pharmacy is one of a small number of public pharmacy schools in the United States co-located on one campus with other health disciplines. The School of Pharmacy is located on the Health Sciences Campus in the Hospital Hill neighborhood in downtown Kansas City.

The school began as a pharmaceutical department in 1885. In 1889, the department merged with the Kansas City College of Pharmacy. The K.C. College of Pharmacy reorganized in 1898 as the Kansas City College of Pharmacy and Natural Sciences.

The Kansas City College of Pharmacy and Natural Sciences became affiliated with Lincoln and Lee University between 1927 and 1932. It officially joined the University of Kansas City in 1943 as the university's third professional school. It offered Bachelor of Science degrees beginning in 1943, Master of Science degrees beginning in 1951, and PhDs beginning in 1960.

The School of Pharmacy became the first and only state school of pharmacy in Missouri in 1963 when the university joined the University of Missouri System. The same year, the university dedicated a new building solely for the School of Pharmacy.

The school graduated its first all-Pharm.D class in 2000. Five years later, the school opened its first distance location on the University of Missouri campus in Columbia. The school moved into the Health Sciences Building on the Health Sciences campus on Hospital Hill in 2007. The school opened its second distance location at Missouri State University's downtown Brick City Building in Springfield in 2014.
